Nephele was a cloud in Greek mythology that resembled Hera. During a banquet, King Ixion of the Lapiths attempted to flirt with the goddess Hera. Zeus made Hera invisible and created Nephele as her substitute. Ixion, drunk, coupled with this illusion, fathered the centaurs. Later, this progenitor centaur mated with the mares on Mount Pelion, becoming the ancestor of all centaurs. Afterward, Nephele wandered in the halls of Olympus. Hera commanded King Atamantus of Boeotia to marry her, and they had two children, Philemon and Helie.
